Woodward, Reported to the JVaikato County Counjy] yesterday that the contractor was makfpg good progress with tho reconstruction 'of tho main south road near Ohinejrai. The remaining length of tho highway in the Waikato County was in good order. The Hamilton-Paeroa main highway required constant attention pwirig to tho large amount of traffic it tarried, and about 700 yards of chips had been spread ovor tho surface during the last month. Mr. Woodward-said tho Hamilton-Roto-(.U;i main highway was in very good erdor at present. Kegravelling work had £een done on tho Cambridgo-Morrins-jpillo main highway. Owing to tho im- - proved surface, ttiis road was now carry. jn£ most of the direct traffic. The reconditioning of the To Kauwhata-Wai-Jakaruru main highway through To Kau,whata had been completed, and the gurfaco and alignment of the road had teen greatly improved. Tho road from JTe Kauwhata to Waerenga was being repaired with metal, while repairs had plso been carried out between Waerenga pud Okaeria. / • Little damage was dono to the Ohine-,wai-Tahuna road through flooding last pwnth, and tho road had been greatly improved by shingling. Tho engineer detailed tho improvements that had been carried out to the roads, Uridges and culyerts in the various ridings. A deputation of ratepayers at Taujwharo complained that Scotsman's Valley [Road had been ; subject to flooding, and jwas impassable in wet weather. The speakers stated that the cutting of a new channel and tho growth of willows in an adjoining drain had caused tho flooding. The engineer reported that the best way to reipedv tho position was to jijake a deviation in the road. It was agreed to give tho matter attention next summer. At the instance of Mr. R. G. Young, Orini, who waited on the council, It ;was decided to support tho settlers concerned in their efforts to obtain provision for optional rating on the acreage basis incorporated in the Taupiri Drainage and River Act. An excellent and complete photographic record of past chairmen of the Waikato County Council has been obtained, and the photographs are now on the walls of the council's meeting chamber. Mr. F. R. Claude, the first chairman, occupied the position from January 9, 1877, to November 27, 1878. Captain William Steele, the commander of the first pioneer company of militia, who arrived in Hamilton on August 24, 1864, and thus founded tho town, was cliairman from 1873 to 1834. Sir. A. Primrose was chairman from 1884 to 1906, Mr. John Gordon, from 1906 to 1909, Sir. John T. Bailey, from 1909 to 1926, and Mr. W. Newell, from 1926 to 1929. All those named, except Sir. Gordon and Sir: Newell, are alive. Sir. T. Hinton is the present chairman of the council. The photographs of Sir. Claude and Captain Steele wero added to tho collection to-day.
