CROSS-COUNTRY RACING. CHAMPIONSHIP ON SATURDAY. Tlife Auckland Amateur Athletic and Cyolc Club has been gronted permission by the Auckland liacing C lub to conduct ils winter com net it ions ut" the Ellerslie racecourse on Saturday next. Four events, including the club's five-miles cross-country championship, will be decided. Fifty-three yea'rs ago. when the club held its inaugural meeting, Ellerslio was tho venue. On that occasion running events were won by Messrs. \V. Ring, sen., and It. Duder, and the shot jjut by Mr. J. 11. B. Coates (now Sir James Coates), who are members of the Auckland liacing Club. The chief event on aatimlay will be tlie Mitchelson Steeplechase, over fivo miles of (he Ellerslie country, or about a mile longer than the Creat, Northern Ktepiilecluhc. This will be a handicap, the Iledluncl Cup going to the first harrier home and the club's championship medal to llie, harrier who. registers fastest time. Ihe \V C.
