WATERFRONT ROAD.

Sir, —It- is unnecessary for "V> aterfront'' to point out to Kobimarama freeholders of the beach frontage in question that if the council decided to take tlie.se seclions it would be dono under the Public Works Act. Being mostly city business folk they are fully cognisant of this, and the very fact that, v.iiilo most unwilling to lose their properties, they are prepared to acquiesce, proves the bona, fides of their objection to the desecration of the beach. They realise that only by bo doing can a creditable job be made of this portion of the waterfront road. A fact not fully appreciated is that most of these properties will bo left several feet below the new road level, involving the council in considerable compensation. As this scheme is generally countered by quoting tho difficulty of at present raising funds for such a purchase I would suggest that a scheme be evolved whereby tho owners accept city debentures at mortgage interest rates (say, 6 or 6i per cent.) for a specified period, the council to provide a sum of £3OOO to £SOOO in cash (part of purchase price) ;;o that owners may not be embarrassed when making new housing arrangements. The feasibility of this scheme is apparent and the owners being mostly business people will quickly realise its practicability. Beach Home.
