PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH.

MODERATOR APPOINTED. CENTRAL FUNDS POSITION. The Rev. Morgan Richards, of Takapuna, was appointed moderator-of, the Auckland Presbytery for. the ensuing six months, at a meeting of'the Presbytery last, evening. . An appeal to Presbyterian congregations to remit their contributions to, the general funds of the church not" less.frequently than once a quarter" "was made by ilr. J. W. - Ryburn, "when reporting for the property/and finance " committee. He strongly emphasised the unsatisfactory results that followed from congregations retaining possession of sums that ought.to be' forwarded to headquarters. Hfi quoted a statement showing that while the Auckland Presbytery had been assessed at- £4350 for the year,;, during tho first half of the year only £1037 had been received. Congregations 'were usually most scrupulous in. seeing that their minister's salary was paid regularly, but when it came to their, representatives in the back blocks, among the Maoris or on tho foreign field, thov virtually said by their actions that the':io were to bo paid only once a year. Tho various activities of the Presbyterian Social Service Association were reported on by the Rev. T. Halliday, superintendent of tho association. Referring to iei'vices at -Mount Eden prison ho stated that on the previous. Sunday ho had "a most delightful service" with 120 prisoners. Tho third Sunday in the month was in future to bo reserved for representatives of the Presbyterian- Church. The work at Manna Houso was being continued, and over 200 hot meals were being given daily to tho unemployed. The Office-bearers' Association had given valuable assistance in enabling him to place a. number of young lads on farms. Gardening work had also been found for some. During July 900 families; had been visited And assisted as tho occasion demanded. Assistance for their orphanage .work was as urgently required as ever. Steps were being taken to securo a permanent hall for the work of the association. Mr. Halliday. was recommended for appointment as 'the Presbytery's prison chaplain.
