UNIVERSITY SOCIAL WEEK.

With the object of bringing together in the Auckland University College those of the community who are interested in its welfare and development, a series of four social functions is' being held, the first of which took place last evening. These have been arranged in three groups according to professions, and the wives of some of the Auckland doctors, lawyers and architects are acting on the three committees. A concert, followed by a reception, was given by the members of the executive in the university Jjall yesterday, and this evening and to-morrow the functions will take the form of bridge parties, and on Friday a dance will be held. The hostessos last evening were Lady Fowlds, who wore a frock of black embossed chenille georgette, and Dr. Buckley Turkington, who was in black georgette with an Oriental lame bridge coat. The members of the executive were Mrs. A. E. Mulgan, who wore a draped frock of black lace; Miss Ruth Walker, who was in black lace embroidered with floral motifs; and Mr. M. Rocke O'Shea, Mr. J. Nigel Wilson and Mr. A. Ki Turner. Appreciation of the efforts of the members of the executive to bring the people of Auckland into closer touch with the university was expressed by Sir George Fowlds, president of the University College. He congratulated tho members on their successful organisation of the gatherings, and wished them every success. The concert opened ' with chamber music from Dvorak's "Nigger" Quartette, which was given by Mrs. C. H. Hayes, Miss Lalla Hemus, Mr. Colin Munro and Mr. A. Long. The four parts, "Allegro ma non troppo," "Lento," "Molto Vivace" and "Vivace" were most delightfully played, and were listened to by a very appreciative audience. This was followed by a one-act play, "The Twelve Pound Look," by Barrie, the parts being taken by Miss Marie Gaudin, Miss Ina Allan, Mr. J. D. Swan and Mr. Hamish Henderson, members of tho Auckland Little Theatre Society.

Following the concert, the guests were entertained at a reception held in the women's common room, which was decorated for the occasion with spring flowers and bamboo foliage.
