MANUKAU AMATEUR CLUB.

FOUBISTER MAINTAINS FORM.

The enthusiasm of members of the Manukau Amateur Cycling Club was tested to (ho utmost last Saturday ' afternoon when conditions were decidedly unfavourable for road racing. However, 18 members competed, seven in tho junior race and 11 in the senior event. Tho juniors raced over one lap, fivo miles. The winner was W. Webb, 3m 30s, who scored rather an easy victory by finishing 24s ahead of the next rider, L. Cogau, 3m 30s. Webb obtained tho lead on the hill section whero Bicknell, tho limit rider, was compelled to retire witli mechanical troublo when ho was. almost assured of a win. Webb commenced racing late last road season, but his win last Saturday was his first placing. His time for tho live miles, 16m ,325, was distinctly good for practically a novice. 11. V. Gordon, lm, was the fastest of the seven juniors. He covered the distance in 14m 485,. a rido of great merit under the conditions. _ His gaining of-time honours occasioned little surpriso for lie has been riding with success in senior contests this season, having scored a win and three seconds, performances which place him first in the running for the Kohn points cup. Gordon finished fourth, 46s after the winner. The seniors had a gruelling ride in their four Inps of tho new course. Tho lono scratch rider, R. G. Foubister, was conceding 6m start to tho two limit riders,. S. R. Gatland and G. P. Clark. Thero was not a dull moment during the race. At the 'half-way mark nono had retired and 2ni 35s separated Foubister from the leader, Clark. 'lt was on tho third lap that the winner, E. Mullane, 3m, took the lead from Clark. Ho then made a determined and successful effort to brighten up the pace with the result that he drew away on his own to win by lm ss. Mullane's prospects in the 50 miles championship raco on September 20 are good. In securing second place 011 Saturday, H. R Dvvight., lm. gavf> a glimpso of his old form It was easily his host rido this year and if lie maintains his fitness he will ho able to defend worthily his championship title. li. G. Foubitser, scr, for the sixth successive occasion, gainod fastest time. Ho had a hard ride, and, except for a couple of miles on tho initial lap when ho- paced along with J. Whittcn, lm, rode unpaced. Much interest was taken in the thrilling duel for time honours between Foubister. Dwight and Cleaver. Tho latter two benefited from mutual pacing work. At the half-distance all three clocked identical times. 28m 40s. Even at tho end of tho third lap tho issue was well in doubt for Foubister had only an advantage of Bs, It was only through a splendid last lap effort that Foubister was able ,lo uphold his reputation. The conditions were by no means conducive to speed work yet Foubister was able to lower his previous record tim* by two seconds,
