WOMEN IN SMOKING CARS.

Sir.—Of course., as your correspondent "M.T.C." infers, women who smoke in non-smoking compartments are lawbreakers, but thoy have. as much right as men to occupy smoking compartments if they do not object to the vile fumes of tobacco and tho objectionable language often . used by men who frequent such compartments. The "fair" sex is supposed to be, and pretends to be, opposed to tobacco smoke, and when they invado places meant for men, to the discomfort and confusion of the latter, it seems time to protest. Women are fond of fresh air: often when men arc snugly seated in an atmosphere of warmth and thick smoke, in rush somo women who push up the windows allowing an unwelcome draught to go through tho carriage, quite regardless of tho wishes and comfort. Af others. Men are not allowed to smoke in a non-smoker, so why should women interfere with men's pleasure by invading their quarters? With women all around him a man is hardly ungallant enough to light his pipe. As to "Granny's" letter, it is correct in two instances. A woman who sacrifices her "crowning glory" hnlps to keep tho barber while conforming to a custom that is detrimental to her own looks and dignity. Intelligent men langli at the present-day "fashions of women: But I think the timo is not far distant whon there will be a distinct change. Tho other sensible part of "Granny's" letter is whero it declares that insufficient timo is allowed for women and children to alight from trains at by-stations. From personal experience I quito agree with this. May I add lam not the prejudiced old fogey this writer would infer. Uncle Jew.
