MURDER OF GIRL.
WASHINGTON SENSATION. CONFESSION BY ACCUSED. . WASHINGTON. July '22. The murder of Miss Mary Baker, chief clerk of the Navy Department, and the story of how an attempt was made to place the blame upon an innocent man, are revealed as a result of the ailCSt/ Cif Herbert Campbell. The arrested man, who is an estat# agent, aged 40, lias been formally charged with the murder, which created a great sensation in April. , Many weeks ago the police established the fact that Campbell's revolver was used to kill Miss Baker, whose body was found shortly after she had been heard, quarrelling with a man in her own parked motor-car. When tho police questioned Campbell, wl.-o is a married man with two children, he gave information which led to Urn arrest of Herman Barrcre, an itinerant portrait painter. Barrens was traced tu Montreal and brought back to stand his trial. He related facts which turned the tables on Campbell. The police released Barrel* and arrested Campbell, who has since made a qualified confession.
