AMERICA DEFEATED.
FRANCE RETAINS TROPHY.
FOUR MATCHES TO ONE.
By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. 'PARIS. July 21 France retains (lie Davis Cup, having defeated America in the challenges round by four matches to one. In the final singles matches to-day Borotra (France) beat Lott, 5—7, 6—3, 2—6, 6—2, B—6; and Cochot (France) beat Tilden, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1, 7-5. ' The matches were played at Autcuil in the presence of 12,000 spectators. Lott and Borotra were opposed to each other in the crucial game. Lott started well, but the Frenchman steadied and won the second set. Lott dominated the third, hut Borotra, spurred on by the prospect of defeat, played superbly, driving and smashing the American all over the court.
The final set was full of thrills, though Lott made mistakes aud Borotia won with an unapproachable base-line drive amid veils of enthusiasm.
Tlio match between Cocliet and TilcJen wiis a line exhibition, hut Cocliet had his opponent nt his mercy after the end of the second set.
