GRANTS CURTAILED.
Sir.—l am confident that the action of tho Government in withholding tho usual State aid to a largo number of social societies will be condemned on every hand. That most worthy society the St. John Ambulance Association is "to be docked to the tune of £4OO, the Society for the Protection of Women and Cliildren in a like amount. Tho salaries oi the Plunket nurses is reduced from £16.615 to £13,050. which means fewer Plunket nurses. The Royal Humane Society., the Girl Guides' Association and the * Royal Lrfe-Saving Society oro also passed by I Tho amount so saved is infinitesimal compared to the lavish outlay on political railways which is being squandered in the South Island, and. while tho saving is small by comparison, it means a <rreat deal to these worthy institutions, which find great difficulty in those hard times in getting sufficient support to enable them to "carry on their useful work. This is not economy; it is parsimony, and utterly unworthv of any Government, but especially of "one which at. the same time proposes to extract from the present overburdened taxpayers an extra £2,000.000 in the coming year. A change of Government seems the only remedy. J. TiionNEs. 231, Farnell Road.
