RENT RESTRICTION ACT.
Sir,—Mr. Thornes takes the matter too seriously The measure was passed about 15 years ago in the excitement of war ami at first caused some annoyance' hut for many years has been a dead letter. It has been amended so often that body knows what it means or bothers to inquire, as it docs not affect anyone. Every year the Labour Party dramatically cracks the big whip, the Government obediently kennels up. and r.o the fare# goes on, and why not? Things are drab enough, and a little amusement helps. Mr. Thornes forgets that a number of overworked civii servants are employed addressing envelopes and attaching stamps to circulars sent far and wide under cover of this useful Act, and what is to happen if it is repealed? They would probably join the unemployment procession and vote the wrong way. This must b# avoided at all costs. Amusement Tax.
