DAMAGE TO A SCHOOL.

FOUR CLASSROOMS GUTTED

Damage estimated at about £I3OO was done to the Central School, New Plymouth, to-dny by a fire which broke out about 6 p.m. The origin was apparently in a defective chimney in one of the classrooms.

The flames spread rapidly through the rafters and it was two hours before the outbreak was subdued, owing to the great difficulty in getting at the seat of the flames.

Four classrooms were practically gutted and water and smoke caused considerable damage to books and fittings. The school is a large one, accommodating nearly 600 pupils. It is built of wood and is very old. The Education Department carries its own fire risk.

Shortly after ten o'clock this morning a fire broke out in the oflice occupied by Mr. M. Marlow, commission agent, whose premises are situated near the Gretna Hotel, Taihape. The flames spread rapidly and had a good hold when the fire brigade arrived. Aided by a high water pressure the firemen quickly subdued the outbreak, but not before the oflice had been completely gutted and many valuable books nnd• documents belonging to various bodies of which Mr. Marlow is secretary had been destroyed. A number of pound notes and two cheques were burned.

Tlio brigade prevented the fire from spreading to (lie adjoining sample rooms.

UNOCCUPIED HOUSE IN CITY

CONSIDERABLE DAMAGE DONE

Extensive damage to tlio kitchen, stairs and passage of an unoccupied house of six rooms, at the corner of Federal and Kingston Streets was caused by tiro, which broke out shortly after six o'clock last evening. Smoke issuing from a window (if tlio bouse, which is a two-storeyed building with an iron roof, attracted the attention of u passer-by. The city brigade was summoned and after some difticulty suppressed the outbreak.
