OBITUARY.

MR. CARL GULBRANSEN

The death has occurred of a very old resident of Matakolie and Paparoa, Mr. Carl Gustavo Gulbransen, aged 80 years. Mr. Gulbransen was a native of Norway and came to New Zealand over 40 years ago. Originally a ship's carpenter, his long residence in New Zealand was occupied mainly in farming. He was married to Annie Jane McCallum, a daughter of tho late Mr. Samuel McCallum. of Paparoa, and members of his family are well known in North Auckland.

'l'he respect and esteem in which the late Mr. W. L. Hopewell was held in Whatigarei was shown hy the large gather ing at the funeral. The Whangarci Municipal Silver Ri.id was at the head of the cortege, followed by a large number of members of the Ancient Order of Foresters. The Whatigarei Borough Council and the Whangarei School Coinmitteo were represented. The service at the graveside was conducted by Captain Dick, of the Salvation Army.

MR. ALFRED PHILPOTT

The death of Mr. Alfred Philpott, who died at Auckland yesterday, removes one of the leading New Zealand authorities on lepidoptera, and his researches were constantly quoted by workers in other lands. He was assistant entomologist at the Cawthron Institute for many years, and successfully introduced the aphelinus, the enemy of the woolly aphis, which previously caused so much loss in fruit orchards. Retiring from the str\ff of the institute tie continued for a time ns nn honorary research worker until August last, when lie removed to Auckland, where he carried out entomological work at the Auckland Museum. Before coming to Nelson Mr. Philpott lived at Invercargill, where he was curator of the Southland Museum. He was also a well-known authority on literan subjects.
