NEW POLICE COMMISSIONER.
Cordial approval of the appointment of Mr. Wolilmann as Commissioner of Police can and will be given throughout the Dominion. By seniority among officers of high rank he is fully entitled to this elevation to the most responsible post in the force. His career has been in every way an adequate preparation for it. Steadily, from the day of his entry to the service, he has risen in estimation as he has passed step by step up the ladder of regular promotion. He has had a full share of duty in both the executive and clerical divisions. After experience in inspectorial work, he was appointed Commissioner of Police in Western Samoa at the time of the substitution of civil for military control, and his very capable handling of a somewhat difficult situation proved him to be possessed of initiative and force of character as well as tact. During his superintcndency in Auckland he has thoroughly established himself in the esteem of all citizens. In the force itself he is known as a strict disciplinarian, yet he has commanded the admiration and affection of his subordinates. His bearing at all times has been in every way worthy of the increasing responsibilities to which lie has been called. Public acknowledgment of these things is due to him on the occasion of this well-merited appointment. There have been at times selections of appointees to this position from outside the New Zealand force: Mr. Wohlmann's rising to it. is a tribute to the force of which lie is a product as well as to his own sterling qualities. For every possible reason, the right man has been chosen, and in Auckland particularly, where he has served the Dominion most recently, his selection evokes congratulation to him personally and satisfaction at the prospect of the widest use of his capabilities and experience.
