(Published by arrangement.) THE UNEMPLOYMENT REPORT AND THE POULTRY INDUSTRY. A suggestion that many of tho present unemployed could bo profitably engaged in the poultry industry is included in tho report of tho committee appointed to investigate the question of unemployment in New Zealand. Naturally thero is a proviso. Tho opinion is ventured that if stock food grains were admitted free new poultry farms could bo established on a paying basis. No mention is mado of tho fact that the poultry industry is already suffering from over-production. Further, as far as tho North Island is concerned, the proposition isi obviously hopeless when tho present state of the industry as regards eggs for export is inquired into. If the abolition df tho duty on fowl \vhcat is in the minds of those responsible for tho report, tho fallacy of such a step will bo apparent to tho Sjorth Island egg-producer. Tho cost of bringing his wheat from tho South Island is, roughly, equivalent to tho amount of duty that would bo lifted. 110 would, therefore, merely bo on tho samo basis as tho South Island poultry farmer is at tho present time, and tho unpleasant fact has to bo faced That " South'' 'lsland egg-producers cannot produce eggs for export at a profit without a Government subsidy that must com# from ths pockets of the taxpayers.
