RAILWAY BRANCH LINES.
WORKING UNDER GUARANTEE PROPOSAL BEING CONSIDERED. [BY TELEGRAPH. —SPECIAL REPORTER.] WELLINGTON. Monday. Proposals that the branch lines, which it is intended to close under the Railway Department's curtailment programme, should be allowed to continue to operate, subject to local guarantees being made, are under consideration, according to a statement made to-day by the Minister of Railways, the Hon. W. A. Veitch. "I shall be very glad to come to an arrangement of this kind in as many cases as possible," said Mr. Veitch. "It will be an arrangement not necessarily profitable to tho department, but merely one to Obviate loss on actual working, not including interest charges on tho cost of these branch lines, which, in any case, would go on if tho line 3 were closed."
