DAVIS CUP CONTEST.
AMERICA BEATS ITALY. FIRST THREE MATCHES WON. (Received July '2O, 5.15 p.m.) PARIS. July 39. In the final of the intcrzone play in the Davis Cup contest America has defeated Italy by winning the first three matches. Allison (America) yesterday beat Stefani (Italy) in the first singles, 4—6, 7_g ( 6—l. 3—6, 10—3. Lott (America) was leading do Morpurgo, 3—6, 9—7, 10—8, when play was abandoned owing ta tho bad light. Continuing to day Lott won tho fourth set. 6—o. In the doubles Allison and van Ryn defeated de Morpurgo and Gasilini, 5—7, 6—2, -6—4. I—6.1 —6. 6—3.
Commenting on the first singles Tilden savs Allison snatched a. sensational victory from Stefani when ho was facing defeat. Tho American led s—l in tho second set and had three sets points, but he lost to Stefani in the fourth set. Tho Italian led 4—2 when Allison rallied and volleyed brilliantly. Stefani also had a 3—o advantage in the final set and went to s—l, but Allison, fighting hard, pulled up and led 6—5 and won a great match. Both players were distressed at the finish.
