SAILORS AS JOCKEYS.
NOVEL RACE MEETING. ROYAL NAVY PARTICIPATES. In honour of the recent visit of 11.M.5. Dunedin to Nukualofa, Tonga, the Tongan Racing Club organised a special race meeting. The weather was ideal and a record crowd attended. Of course, (lie horses were not up to the standard seen on New Zealand courses, hut the enthusiasm of the Tongan racing fraternity was quite equal to that of Dominion followers. Two of the events were dedicated to the Navy, the officers and men of the Dunedin acting as jockeys. The sailors' race was the cause of much amusement. Fifteen horses lined up, and were despatched in fairly good style. En route to the winning post several minor accidents occurred, and not a few of the men finished on foot. The race was won by Signalman Nixon, whose mount beat the second horse, ridden by Seaman McLean, by a length. This event provided the largest dividend of the day. The officers' race was won in splendid style by Lieut.-Commander Terry, closely followed by Commander Jeffries. Commodore G. Blake w?s placed third, being two lengths behind, the- winner. Musical items were rendered by the cruiser's band.
