GOVERNMENT BONDS IN DEMAND. Business was very quiet at the single call on the Auckland Stock Exchange on Saturday, only three sales being recorded. Offers for Government bonds continued firm at tho higher levels set on Friday. Quotations for Auckland Harbour Boards, 1940, per cent., hardened 10s at £IOO without attracting any response from buyers. There was little inquiry for banks and offers were a little easier. Commercials of Australia were released at 21s, a fall of Id on the current price. New South Wales were inquired for 2s 6d lower at £35 2s 6d, sellers quoting £36. In insurance quotations for South British showed a rise of 6d at 59:; 6d. Tho loin and agency group was quiet, but a sale of New Zealand Guarantee Corporations was made at 7s 9d, a drop of Id on the price realised at the last Auckland sale on Thursday, lit coals the new issue of llenowu Collieries picfererico sold at 2s 9d. In shipping Devonport Ferries were wanted 3d dearer at 235. Little interest was shown in the miscellaneous section. Wilsons Cement were wanted at 38s Gd, sellers quoting 435. (Received July '2O, 5.45 p.m.) LONDON. July 19 Tljo Observer states that although it is understood that Australia was advised by "the hipjhpst authority" in privately placing the Treasury bills issued last week, Icccn observers in the London (lis count market believe that hotter terms would have been obtained competitively.

The cablegram published on Thursday staled that the Commonwealth had privately placed £5,000,000 of Treasury bills at, 4 per cent, discount. Tho bills are dated July 18, and will inaturo on Docomber 18 The effective rato of interest on theso terms is equivalent to £4 Is 3d per cent., as compared with £2 6s 9d per cent , the current rate for British Treasury bills. ♦
