GOOD PICTURE SALES.
OUTSTANDING PAINTINGS

Already nearly .C 15.000 has changed blinds between buyer and artist at the lioyal Academy, where more than 200 exhibits have been sold, llie exhibition opened only three weeks ago. This, an official at Burlington House says, is considerably more than last year and if iho standard" is maintained the year 1950 will prove, to be a bumper one. The biggest prices paid so far have gone to Sir John Lavery for "The Chess Players" and to Mr. Charles Wheeler for his sculpture, "Spring."
An analysis given by the Morning Post critic shows that of the pictures sold 106- are oil paintings, 27 water colours, 55 drawings and prints and 12 pieces of sculpture. Ten of the number have been purchased by (he Ohantrey trustees. Iheso are: "Ihe Late Dame Millicent I awcett (Mrs. Annie Swynnerton), "From My Bedroom Window" (Mr. A. J. Munnings), "Cordelia" (Mr. Walter W- Russell I, "llio Chess Players" (Sir John Lavery), "The Late Sir Robert Lorimer, A.R.A., as a Boy" (Mr. John 11. Lorimer), "llie Artist's Mother" (Mr. Fiddes Watt). "Paddlers," a water colour by Mr. P. Wilson Steer, and two pieces of sculpture, "Spring—Statuette, Bronze," by Air. Charles \\ heeler, and "Autumn—Statuette, Carved tn Ivory," by Mr. Richard Garbe. Five of "the works bought are by members of the Royal Academy and five by "outsiders." Outstanding paintings purchased by private buyers include excellent landscapes such as "Autumn" (Mr. Arnesby Brown), Mr. Richard Jack's "Cathedral Mountain from Lake OTlara," "Tho Spev, Fochabers" (Mr. S. J. Lamorn;v Birch), Mr. Reginald. 0. Bruudit's splendid "The Devil's Bridge" and Mr. 11. Bush's freshly visualised and admirablypainted "The Wayside Tree." Dame Laura Knight's largest and best work, the "Ballet Girl and Dressmaker," also has found a buyer, as haw other pictures by her. The Chant rev trustees have purchased Mr. Hubert. Austin's delightful "Bain de Pied," which was shown at the exhibition of the Royal Society of I'aintcrs in Water Colours.
