At question timo Mr. A. Fenner Brock way, Labour member for Ley ton East, insisted on making a speech .sympathetic to India, and the Prime Minister, Mr. Mac Donald, moved his suspension. While the division was being taken Mr. Brockway left tlio House. Thereupon Mr. ,T. Beckett, Labour member for Beckham, Cambervvell, one of the teller.s, seized the mace and ran toward an exit shouting: " Mr. Speaker, it is a d—d disgraco," An attendant recovered the maco and Mr. Beckett stood at tho bar of the House while Mr. Mac Donald moved his suspension also, which has agreed to. Both suspensions will operate until July 25. The Speaker declared that of Mr. Brockway carried and that of Mr. Beckett was carried by 32? votes to four. 'lho division was taken in an atmosphere of great excitement. There was much " booing" and shouts of " third degree." According to tlio News-Chronicle the Government takes a most serious view of tho Beckett outrage—the, " Rape of the Mace," as tho Times calls it. It is stated that Mr. Mac Donald may move a motion recording tho House's condemnation of Mr. Beckett's action. The Sketch says steps have already been taken to expel him from tho Labour Party.
