HERE AND THERE.
Two old manuscripts discovered in recent years have been used in the preparation of a new translation of " The Quatrains of Omar Khayyam." Both manuscripts were, published in Persian in 1925 by J)r. Frederick Rosen, who lias now translated them.
In New York a club called the Kingsley Club has been formed by stammerers who wish io help themselves by making speeches in each other's company. Charles Kingslev, the novelist, after whom the club is named, was afllicted with a slammer. There is a similar club in Philadelphia. .An exhibition is being held in Paris representing 100 years of French literature, from Rousseau to (lie Parnassians such as Victor Jlttco and Do Mussct. The exhibition consists of first, editions, manuscripts, and miniatures. M. Poland Marcel, f he director of the Bibliotheijue Nationale, is organiser. The old Tudor House in High Street, Rochester, immortalised by Charles Dickens as Mr. Sapsea's house, in "Edwin Drood." has been purchased by the Rochester Corporation. The house also answers to the description of Mr. Pumblechook's residence in '• Great Expectations."
Miss ltadclyffe Hall has 1 >oe n award oil the 1930 Eicliclliergrr (.iold Modal for her novel,' "Adam's Breed." which was published in 1926. Her hook was chosen for this award, which is made periodically, because, according to an .American description, it " typified the humane viewpoint." In 1926 " Adam's Breed " ■won both the Femina Vie Hcureu.se Prize and the James Tail Black Memorial Prize.
