WAITEMATA COUNTY.

CONDITION OF HIGHWAYS.

MEETING OF THE COUNCIL.

Tho Waitemata County Council met yesterday, Mr W. A. Bishop presiding. The annual levy of general and separate rates, notified last month, was struck. A special order was adopted authorising tho raising of £I6OO for metalling, widening and culverting Upanuku Road, in the Waipareira Riding. Interest is not to exceed per cent, and provision is to lie made for the redemption of the loan by a sink ing fund of not less than £3 per cent, per annum.

The county engineer in his report Stated that, generally speaking, the surfaced roads in the county vvero in fair condition throughout. In an endeavour to reduce expenditure as much as possible throughout the county, instructions had been issued to the various riding foremen to confine their operations to purely necessary maintenance work. Several slips had taken place on the earthworks portion of the main highway in the Titirangi Hiding, hut these were mostly of small magnitude, and could easily be remedied when fine weather permitted of their removal with safety. Application had been made at a recent meeting of the No. 1 District Highways Council to have l-'orest Hill Itoad declared a main highway, hut the application had hern refused. Crewe s Bridge had huuri inspected and passed for linal payment by the Public Works Department. Application had been made to the Main Highways lioard to have the Hobsonville Main *I!o;id declared a main highway and tho road had been placed first in order of importance lot new main high ways in the No. 1 district, it being con sidered tli.it the additional traffic to the llohsonville aerodrome warranted this Etep briii'' taken.

Ihe engineer said it was absolutely essential th it Britrbam's Creek Bridge should be reconstructed as soon as possible, on account of the fact that the •sisting structure was in a dangerous coniition. The decision with respect to this bridge was deferred for a month to allow the clerk to ascertain the council's legal position with respect to operating on loan money authorised by the Governor -Ocn-eral-in-Coutic.il for highway construction. One councillor contended that highway construction did not mean bridge construct ion.
