HEAVY FALLS OF SNOW.

MOTOR-CARS ABANDONED.

TELEGRAPH POSTS BROKEN. TAIHAPE DISTRICT AFFECTED. [bv telegraph.—own correspondent.] TAIHAPE. Thursday. A heavy fall of snow was experienced at Taihapo yesterday afternoon, the main street being covered to a depth of three inches. In some of the country districts nine inches was recorded. A hailstorm and heavy rain preceded the snowfall. The roads were in a deplorable condition last evening and several farmers who had motored to town were unable to return home. A number of cars were abandoned on the road. Telegraph posts fell down in some of the surrounding districts, completely disorganising the service in those areas. The weather improved greatly to-day, bright sunshine predominating. .Much of the snow has thawed. Indications point to a frost occurring to-night.

What is stated to bo tho heaviest fall of snow for 25 years was experienced at Komako, 30 miles from Pohangina, yesterday. There was a depth of about 4in. round tho township. Tho surrounding country was a wonderful sight in its thick mantle, of white. It had had no snow upon it for three or four years. According to the extent of tho snow on tho flats, it is estimated that it is about a foot deep on tho foothills. It is not known how tho early lambs will bo affected, as that is dependent upon how soon the thaw occurs. The snow extended from Komako for eight miles toward Palmerston North.
