PROVINCIAL CUP. THAMES V. WHANGAEEL A slight superiority on attack gave Thames a victory over Wliangarei in a contest which was interesting throughout. A fast pace was set from tho start, both teams attacking in turn. Whangarei was unfortunate not to score when the ball was taken through to the circle only for the Thames goalkeeper to save brilliantly. A retaliatory movement on tho part of Thames saw the forward lino combining perfectly and following a melee in the Wliangarei goal mouth Miss Ritchie netted with a fine shot. Wliangarei rallied prior to tho close of tho spell but the score at the interval was: —Thames, i; Whangarei, 0. Thames dominated tho opening play of tho second Imif, one particularly dangerous offensive against the Whangarei goal being halted for offside. Thames went further ahead as a result of a penalty bully. Miss (irubb scoring. The double reverse nettled Whangarei which came strongly in reply, but frequent breaches of tln> offside rule nullified its efforts. Miss Ritchie scored nutiin for Thames, and in the filial stages Whangarei gained its only sonl through good play by Miss Berrich. The final score was:— Thames, 3; Whangarei, 1. AUCKLAND A V. AUCKLAND B. After dominating the play for the major part of the match Auckland A had victory snatched from it in the closing stages. The initial raids canio from Auckland A with its opponents defending strenuously. A counter offensive resulted in Auckland B almost working through, but play centred again. The Auckland B forwards could do little against the resolute defence set tip and their spasmodic passing movements usually ended abruptly. A series of comers put Auckland A at an advantage which it held to half-time, although no goal was scored. Fine combination between tho members of the Auckland A vanguard should have proved fruitful but the forwards' parting shots went well astray. The B team was seen to advantage in tho subseo.uent exchanges and it had had luck in not scoring on one or two occasions. A tine rally m the closing staces crave Auckland B u chance and Miss Hyde was handy of the ij.ucia! moment to net unopposed. The score nt the final whistle read:— Auckland B, 1; Auckland A. 11.
