Miss Jocelvn and Miss Pamela Riddiford, of Lower Hutt, arc staying at the Grand prior to leaving for a visit to tho Islands. Mrs. Gertrude Mae Dillner, A.L.C.M., L.L.C.M., recently sat for the Licentiate diploma in elocution of tho Londor Collego of Music, held at Auckland, and passed successfully. Dr. Thomas was tho examiner. Miss Betty Lee, of Auckland, who has been visiting Mrs. Robert Lee, of Anderson's Bay, Dunedin, left on Saturday to stay with Dr. and Mrs. Anderson at Queenstown. Miss Olive Kettle, who has been on an extended visit to New Zealand, intends to leave in August on her return to London. Sho is now tho guest of Mrs. Russell Grace in Wanganui. Miss Helen Williams, of Johannesburg, has the distinction of being the first woman in South Africa to pass tho final examination of tho Institute of Bankers of South Africa. It is stated that comparatively few men havo passed this examination. A card afternoon was given by tho ladies of the Devonport Bowling Green Croquet Club at the bowlers' pavilion on Friday. About 60 members, with their friends, wero present, and wero received by tho president, Mrs. E. Cooper. Tho winning table was Sirs. Chapman. Sirs Hcwson, Sirs. Higgiuson and Sirs. Willis. The Slount. Roskill branch of tho League of Slot hers held their monthly meeting last week. Canon SlcFarlano spoke of tho serious responsibility of mothers with regard to tho religious training of the child from earliest infancy. Miss Dallon gave elocutionary items. Tho hostesses for the afternoon were Sirs. Grindrod, Sirs. Levins and Sirs. Thompson. Miss Gladys Slonerieff, last seen hero in "Rio Rita," surprised even her own friends at the benefit matinee held in Sydney for Sliss Sluriel Starr, when she recited a poem of her own composition about Amy Johnson, the aviatrix. The verses wero accounted quite good, and Miss Slonerieff was as loudly applauded for her effort as though she had" sung the lines.
