UNEMPLOYMENT RELIEF.
Sir, —Many proposals for the relief of unemployment aro being submitted from tho various bodies of this Dominion, but I would like to suggest that tho New Zealand Rugby Union be asked to play the Maori v. British match as a charity match for the unemployed. It is estimated that the New Zealand Ilugby Union's takings for tho matches played during the British team's tour will be in the vicinity of £50,000, and this is apart from the profits realised from , local matches. The management committee of the New Zealand Rugby Union, therefore, could well afford to set aside the profits of this match for the. above relief, and by suggesting the Maori TOatch, Maoris and Pakehas alike will bo sharing in the glory of giving a helping hand to their more unfortunate brothers and sisters, and I am sure the British team will only bo too happy to concede the-'profit of this match for such a worthy object. The takings from this match would probably realise £SOOO, and this, with tho Government subsidy of pound for pound, would help considerably. This money could bo used for tho improvement of Rugby grounds by the unemployed, and could be spread by the unemployed districts of tho Dominion. I trust the management committee of the New Zealand Rugby Union will give this matter their earnest consideration as they have nothing to lose by such a donation, and I a?m sure they will receive the heartiest support of all "true sports" from 0110 end of the Dominion to the other. _ G. W. Ah ledge. Palmerston North, June' 26.
