OYSTER SEASON OPENS.

BRISK SALE IN CITY. SUPPLY EQUAL TO DEMAND. IMPROVEMENT IN QUALITY. The oyster season opened yesterday, when the large stock which had been accumulated at the Government depot during the last few days was disposed of in a remarkably short time. . Inquiry at the depot in the late afternoon revealed that the demand had been particularly heavy, but that the arrival of fresh stocks this morning would enable all local requirements to be met. The price is the same as last year. At the beginning of the morning the store at the Government depot was full, all the available space being devoted to the storage of sacks of the shellfish. By the afternoon, however, only a few sacks remained, and the retailers had been generously supplied, all the city and country orders having been filled. Mr. F. P. Finn, of the Fisheries Department, stated yesterday that he was gratified at the way the stocks had been cleared. It showed that the department had successfully gauged the demand. Further fresh supplies would bo arriving daily, commencing this morning, and there seemed every prospect that the season would be a most successful one. There was a brisk sale in the city fish shops throughout the day. One retailer remarked that he was selling oysters as quickly as they could be opened. "And we have an expert at work, too," he added. Most of the city dealers were of the opinion that the quality, of the oysters was better than last season.
