MAINTENANCE OF ROADS. WEIGHING OF MOTOR VEHICLES. [t;y TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] PAEROA, Thursday. At a meeting of the Ohinemuri County Council to-day a letter was received from the Minister of Public Works regarding a request for a free grant for repairing the old Te Aroha Road, between Paeroa and Te Aroha The Minister said in 1923 1 lie ' department decided that the condition of the road was solely due to lack of. maintenance by the council. For that reason it considered there was no justification for the expenditure of Government funds. Mr, Mace said the settlers would do their best to keep tho road reasonably safe for traffic. A letter was received from the V\aihi Borough Council detailing the difficulties in checking and estimating the unladen and laden weight ot heavy motor-lorries. The NVaihi Council suggest that it, the Paeroa Borough Council and the Ohinemuri County Council, share the cost of a portable apparatus for checking weights. The cost was about £155 A committee was appointed to interview the Waibi Borough Council "on the matter. The engineer. Mr. K. Shaw, reported that the clay roads in the Waikino Riding were in a bad state and little could I'o done in the w-ay of maintenance 'n 1 lie present weather. In the Waitekauri Riding the Golden Cross Road had slipped into a creek for a distance of a chain, leaving only two feet of formation at the narrowest point. Road was held up as it was necessary to place all the workmen on opening the Golden Cross Road. ft was decided to donate £SO to the mayoral fund for repairs to the Paeroa £cmeteiy.
