OBITUARY.

MRS MARIA HEWITT. The death occurred last week of Mrs. Maria Hewitt, widow of the lato Mr. W. F. Hewitt, aged 89 years; Mrs, Hewitt was the eldest daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Pugli, and was born at Kororareka. In 1845, during the Maori War, her parents went with their young family to Sydney, returning in 1846. In the very early days Mrs. Hewitt taught tho children sewing in tho school at Waimate North. She was a fluent Maori linguist and took a keen interest in tho events of the country. Mrs. Hewitt remembored well the cutting down of the flagstaff at Kororareka by tho famous Maori chief Hone Heke. Mr. Hewitt, died 30 years ago. Mrs. Hewitt is survived by five of her children. There are 25 grandchildren and 24 groat-grand-children.

MR. G. R. MORPETH. The death of Mr. George Robert Morpeth, aged 82, an old identity of Ponsonby, occurred on Tuesday. Mr. Morpeth, who was the third son of the lato Mr. H. D. Morpeth, arrived at Auckland with his parents by tho brig Prince Edward in 1859 after an adventurous voyage of six months from Charlottetown, Princo Edward Island, Canada. For some years he worked on the Thames goldfields, and later joined the firm of Cruikshank, Miller and Co., Auckland. At the time of the opening of the Koolgardie goldfield, Mr. Morpeth went to Australia, but returned in 1897. Ho then took over the control of the firm of Morpotli Bros., receiving and forwarding agents, with which he was associated until his death. Mr. Morpeth did not marry. He is survived by a sister, Mrs. K. H. Haszard, of Auckland.

MR. 4 WILLIAM WILSON. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] CAMBRIDGE, Thursday. The death lias occurred of a wellknown resident of the Cambridge district, Mr. William Wilson, at the age of 73 years. Mr. Wilson was born at Taunton, Somerset, and camo to New Zealand 50 years ago. Ho lived in this district for the greater part of his life. In the early days he was well known as a bush contractor in the Putaruru and Taupo districts. MRS. G. T. SCOTT. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] NEW PLYMOUTH, Thursday. Tho death occurred this morning of Mrs. Mary Helen Scott, widow of the late Mr. G. T. Scott. Mr. and Mrs. Scott were natives of Elgin, Scotland, and came to New Zealand about 20 years ago. They first settled at Napie: ;ind later went to Auckland. They came to New Plymouth about 10 years ago. Mrs. Scott was a prominent worker in tho Women's Christian Temporance Union and was also one of the original members of the New Plymouth Caledonian Society. She is survived by two married daughters and two sons.
