HEN PHEASANTS SHOT.
FINE OF £7 10S IMPOSED. PROSECUTION AT WHANCAREI. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] "WHANGAREI, Thursday. Charges of shooting two lion pheasants and three quail without authority and of failing to produce a licence, wero preferred against A. Beardsell in the Whangarei Magistrate's Court yesterday. Mr. J. F. Briggs, who prosecuted, said a ranger accosted accused, who admitted that he had-no licence. It was a common practice at the end of the season to shoot hen pheasants, and tho greatest difficulty was experienced in securing convictions. Accused said ho shot tho birds by mistake. Tho day was very stormy. He did not see how a person could tell the difference in the birds. The magistrate, Mr. J. N. Morris, said it was a most unsportsmanlike thing to da and it was no use talking about mistakes. "It is a bad case," he added. Accused was fined £7 10s with costs £1 Is on tho first charge, and £2, with costs 10s, on the second count.
