AREA FOR SETTLEMENT.
o GUTHRIE PUMICE LAND. PROGRESS OF PREPARATIONS. [BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] HAMILTON, Thursday. The work being done by the Department of Agriculture on the pumice land at Guthrie near Rotorua, was inspected by Dr. C. J. Reakes, Director-General of Agriculture, this week. Dr. Reakes stated to-day that 2000 acres of virgin country were being prepared for settlement. The land had been cleared of scrub and teams were now engaged in ploughing the land in preparation for spring sowing. Fencing was also proceeding. Dr. Reakes expressed himself as optimistic regarding the quality of the land. It was fully up to expectations, he said. The Lands Department would decide how many sections would be formed in the block.
