LADIES' HOCKEY.

PLAY ON SOFT GROUNDS. POSITIONS OF SENIOR TEAMS. PREPARING FOR COUNTRY WEEK. In spite cf soft grounds games in all three sections of the ladies' hockey competitions were played en Saturday. In the business girls' senior grade section the final series in the first round resulted in Mount Eden defeating Clevedon, 3 to 1. Wesley accounting for Papntoetoe 6 to 0. and Kiwi beating Y. W.C.A. 7 to L Someroile had the bye. The following table shows the positions of teams in senior grade at the conclusion c£ the first round:— Goals, Cn. P. W. D. L. Far. A3. Pta. Mount Eden . . 6 6 Wesiey .. ..6 5 I 13 7 10 Kiwi . ~ C 4 Scmer-riTe .. 6 3 Y.W.C.A. ..52—4 9 27 4 Fapatoetoa .. 6 1 Clevedcn .. 6 All gomes were marred to a certain extent, by slippery grounds., and none could be described as good exhibitions. Of the three possibly the Mount Eden-Clevedan contest was slightly the best, although ia the Wesley-Papatoetoe came at times play was of a fairly high standard, players of both teams hitting and placing the ball with better judgment than is usually the case.

Clevedon appeared to have the better of the came at the commencement and, playing downhill, kept Mount Eden cn defence. The Clevedcn fcrvrards -tvere continually on the ball during the greaser part of the spell and Miss J. McCrdlough found the net. Miss Lowe scored for Mount Eden just prior to half-time. Clevedon becan to weaken in the second spell and its opponents had it continually on defence. After repeated unsuccessful efforts Mount Eden again scored, Miss Lowe notching her second goal. Soon after Mrs. Hamblin netted another goal for

Mount Eden, but there was no further scaring. For Mount Eden Mrs. Hamblin was -easily the best player, while C3evedon's goalkeeper and both fallbacks played The game between Kiwi and Y.W.C.A. was decidedly in favour of the former, whose superior knowledge of the game and mere vigorous tactics kept T.W.C.A. continually on the defence. Kiwi scored three goals within the first quarter of an hour. Y.W.C.A-'s weakness was chiefly in its defence. Miss Brawn, in goal, made some good saves, but owing to lack of support from her backs was greatly handicapped. After half-time Kiwi continued to pile no the score to seven. Misses McLaughlin (2) and Miss Francis souring. Y.W.C.A. only managed to net one goal. Miss McGuinness being the scorer. For Kiwi Miss Francis played well cm the wing and Miss McLaughlin did wcQ also, although at times off-side play and a tendency to give sticks marred her game considerably. Mrs. Sav,-bridge and Misses Phillips and MeOuinness plaved well for Y W.C.A.

Fery little can be said regarding the Wesley v. Papatoetoe sjaxne. Throughout Wesley appeared to bare the better of the game and its defence was seldom troubled. Misses Burton. H. Saunders, M. Clark and E. Saunders were the scorer:; for Wesley, who ran ap a score of six, the two firstnamed players playing very good cames. For Fapatoetoe the goalkeeper and Miss EL Mjf-al2, en the left wine, WL're the . outstanding players. Both selectors were present cn Saturday and players will now soon know who will be likely to be chosen for Country Week, which commences on Monday, July 14. The successes gained by lady member's at the recent examination conducted by the Auckland Hockey Referees'" Association are r«ry pleasing. Five ladies sat and all passed, Mrs. Nicholson and Misses E. Jensry and J. Adams gaining B class, and Misses P. Pbiilipps and G. Lowe C class passes. It is expected .that these ladies will sit for the New Zealand Referees' examination, which is beisc held on July 2.
