OBJECTION TO TARIFFS.

DAIRY FACTORY MACHINERY. DUTY ON STOCK FOODS* [BT TELEGRAPH- —OWN COEBESPOSDEXT. ]' The duty imposed on machinery imported for use in dairy factories was ill* subject of comment by Mr. A. Morton, president of the National Dairy Association, Limited, at the annual, meeting o£ the association to-day. There had been objection to the tariff for some years past, said Mr. Morion, but from time to time the tariff hid been increased. Different Ministers of Customs had been waited upon, but without success. "I am afraid that the importation of this machinery is looked upon mora from a revenue point of view than anything else," he said. "As far as the dairy industry is concerned, it is under a, very heavy imposition by reason of the tariff. Nearly £IOO is paid on an imported article in duiy alone. We will continue to make representations to the Government, but I do not hold cut much hope of success." Referring to the tariff on imported stock foods, Mr. Morton said it was impossible to use some that were required owing to the high tariff. Lower prices were being received for produce, and attention was naturally being turned to byproducts, but here they were immediately confronted by the high tariff on certain foods required whicli prevented their purchase. He was referring particularly to the situation with regard to pigs. H« considered that the imposition was iniauitous.
