IDLE SLAUGHTERMEN.

SITUATION AT SYDNEY.

FIGHT AGAINST LONGER HOURS

(Received June 23, 10.45 p.m.) SYDNEY, June 23.

The slaughtermen's strike against the reintroduction of the 48-hour week has assumed serious proportions, but butchers have given an assurance that there is sufficient meat in cold storage for the city's needs for a fortnight. If necessary the master butchers will do their own slaughtering. Employers' organisations in tho meat industry havo decided to ask the Arbitration Court to deregister the Slaughtermen's Union. The Government has offered ample police protection for those who wish to continue working. The export section of tho meat trade estimates that the strike will cause it a loss of £IO,OOO a week. Tho ordinary stock sales from which the city's moat supply is drawn were today postponed indefinitely.
