WRECK OF A LAUNCH.
ANCHOR DRAGGED IN STORM. BOAT DRIVEN ON TO SHORE. A batterer] wreck is now all that remains of the launch Clematis, which was driven nshoro at Murray's Bay last week. The launch dragged her anchor during a storm and was pounded against a shingle barge that was moored nearer the shore.
The Clematis had lowed two barges of blue metal from Oakley Creek, Avondalc, and the day being fine, tho master went ashore to superintend tho unloading of tho metal. A strong easterly wind sprang up early in the evening and a heavy sea was soon rolling on to tho beach. Tho master attempted to roturn to tho launch, but tho punt, in which ho had come ashore, was swamped almost as soon as it was put into tho water and all attempts to get the punt over the breakers proved in vain. Communication was established with Auckland and a launch was despatched from tho city, but it arrived too Into to bo of anv assistance.
Tho Clematis, which was owned by W. K. Hope, Ltd., was 30ft, long and fated with a powerful oil engine.
