AUSTRALIAN CRICKETERS.

LANCASHIRE AGAIN MET. VISITORS FIVE FOR 231* KIPPAX BAITING WELL. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (Keceived Juno 22, 6.35 p.m.) LONDON, June 21. The Australian cricketers to-day began tho 15th match of their totir against Lancashire at Old Trafford, Manchester* in a return match. The visitors omitted Ppnsford, A'Becket, Grimmett and Walker from the team. The team was:—Lancashire: P. T- Eckersley, Hallows, Watson, R. Tyldesley, E. Tyldesley, R. Iddori, Hopwood, Duckworth, Sibbles, Taylor, Hodgson. Injuries to Walker, Ponsford and A'Beckett made the selection of the Australian team unpleasantly easy. Grim* mett, who is resting in view of the next test match, lemained in London, so that if a 12th man is needed an injured man must field. The county is without the services of McDonald, owing to a strain. The Australians won the toss and went in to bat on an easy wicket, but a shower fell at tho start of tho match, and rain interrupted tho game several times. Woodfull and Jackson had put on 59 by steady play when the captain was splendidly dismissed by Duckworth. Jackson, although slow, was settling down to a deliberate game, timing accurately. He scored the first fours of tha day by cutting Hodgson twice to tha boundary off successive balls. With Bradman he carried the total to 103. Then he was completely beaten by Hodg. son. : Bradman, after a slow beginning, batted delightfully, principally making delicate shots on the leg side. Kippax also was timing well, and pulled a magnificent sixer off the left-hand bowler, Iddon,in his first over. Sibbles dropped a catch off Iddon when Bradman had made 35, but atoned for the blunder in the next over. McCabe, who changed his bat after making two, slogged Tyldesley for a terrific four, and raised the score to 200 in 234 minutes. Then Hodgson, with the new ball, brought about his downfall iq "the next over. Duckworth, the wicket-keeper, was in splendid form, greatly improving on his test match display. Richardson began uncomfortably, and play became dreary. Kippax reached 50 in 140 minutes. Richardson square cut Hodgson for a splendid four, but in trying to repeat the feat was caught brilliantly with one. hand by E. Tyldesley at point. Fairfax played out the over, stumps being drawn at 6.25 p.m. owing to the failing light, when the score was 231 for five wickets. Details of the score are as follows:—* AUSTRALIA.-—First Innings. The cricket match Australia v. Surrey, at the Oval to-day ended in a draw. The visitors raised their first innings score to 388 runs for five wickets and declared. Hobbs and Sandham opened Surrey's second innings, facing a deficit of 226. Grimmett went on at 14 and dismissed Sandham in his first over. Hobbs batted well, but an hour's play produced only; 49 runs. Barling and Hobbs both batted brightly after luncheon, but the former skied a simple catch to mid-on. Hobbs continued batting in great style and reached his 50 in 90 minutes - .The first 100 appeared on the board after 115 ninutes. Frequent changes in'-the bowling failed to worry Hobbs and Shepherd, who scored steadily. Hobbs at 83 was dropped off A'Becketfc, The veteran 'hit one from j A'Beckett to the fence, and reached bis century in 170 minutes. He is tho second batsman to score 100 against tho Aus- | tralians. A'Beckett limped from the field withi a strained left thigh. Hornibrook, though slightly lame; fielded in his place. Shepherd plodded to 50 after 135 minutes. The batsmen then scored freely, and their unfinished partnership of 182 is the most productive of the tour against the Australians.
