BYRD AT WASHINGTON.

HONOURS AND TRIBUTES. MODESTY OF THE EXPLORER. (Received Juno 22, 5.5 p.m.) WASHINGTON, June 21. Rear-Admiral Byrd to-day called on the President, Mr. Hoover, and the Secretary of the Navy, Mr. C. F. Adams. Afterwards he placed a wreath on the grave of his former comrade, Floyd Bennett, in Arlington Cemetery. Tho explorer was the guest of honour at a luncheon given by the Geographic Society, when ho received high tributes from'all sides. He also visited Congress. At the end of a day filled with receptions Rear-Admiral Byrd received from Mr. Hoover the special gold medal of the Geographic Society, from which already he had received its highest customary decoration, necessifitting the making of a special medal for this occasion. The explorer responded modestly. Everywhere lie is insisting upon the responsibility of his men for the success of his Antarctic explorations.
