The black gelding Satrap, who was a really good three-year-old in New Zealand, winning the New Zealand St. Leger and the Great Northern St. Leger, made his first appearance as a hurdler at Canterbury Park, Sydney, on June 7. For nearly a mile and a-half he did so well that, though a failure on the flat since his arrival in Australia, it is considered that he may develop into a useful juniper. He is far from perfect yet in that respeot, but his showing was good enough to raise the hopes qf his trainer, N. McKenna, who is racing him on lease. SOUTHLAND TRAINER'S DEATH. There died at W hit on on June 13 one of Southland's veteran trainers, Mr. Arthur Gerrard, at the age of G6. During his lengthy association with racing in Southland, Mr. Gerrard owned, trained, and rodo many good flat and steeplechase performers. Ho was particularly successful with jumpers, and Peter Simple, Huntsman, Manazona, Typhoon, Fright, White Stockings. Girteen, and Bill Bailey, and, of later years, Isla Bank, Copper Trail, and Cazna, were some of the steeplechasers which were owned by him Mr. Gerrard' met with an accident about three years ago, when he suffered a broken leg. and though an operation cured his disability, he subsequently led a semiretired life, although he had a few horses. AMOUNIS BACK FROM SPELL Amounis, after spelling at Doonside, New South Wales, has returned to F. McGrath's stables at Kensington and, although burly, looks well. His trainer considers that Amounis has every chance of beating Gloaming's stake-winning record of £43,100. The presence of Phar Lap makes the task more difficult but still Phar Lap cannot run in overything,. and place money in weight-for-ago races is so liberal that Amounis may not be long in getting a few thousands that way. Amounis' present total is £40,693 10s. SEASON'S FIXTURES. RACING. June 25— Egmont-Wanganui Hunt. June 27, 28—Napier Park Racing Club. Juno 2£-W»ipa Racing Club. June 28—ivshburton County Racing Club.
