Although they are not run until October 18 and November 4 respectively, ideas are already being formed of tho possibilities for the Caulfield Cup and tho Melbourne Cup, says tho Melbourne Herald. A feature of the present discussion iB that layers will not quote tho " two Phar Laps." It is generally understood that the Melbourne Cup is Phar Lap's solo spring mission, but, tui ho is also in tho field for tho Caulfield Cup, tho first list issued on the cups has him on tho two rung in each race without a figuro against his name. Until the ideas held regarding Phar Lap and tho Caulfield Cup aro disclosed, it will probably havo tho effect of stifling discussions on the double. The crack Sydney juvenile, Tom Pinch, is ono of tho principal early fancies for the Caulfield Cup. Ho is not engaged in tho Melbourne Cup. A very high opinion is held of him and racegoers aro considering whether ho will turn out to be another I^i;ir Lap. An offer of 4000 guineas vvILH refused after he had won only ono lace. Tho fact of Tom Pinch being held on lease by Mr. J. A. Lonnon until October 28 noxt year was, of course, ono difficulty against a salo being effected, but tho man who made tho offer states that ho was prepared to go to 5000 guineas until ho discovered that tho gelding was not engaged in any of tho classics. New Zealand horso3 figuro very prominently in tho lists for both cups. In tho Caulfield Cup Glare, Limerick, Nightmarch, Pequito and Rabbi aro includod in tho second group after Phar Lap, and First Aero and Rational H. aro in the third group, with Arikiwui, Gesto and Sir Roy in tho fourth. In tho Melbourne Cup Chido, Ljmorick and Nightmarch aro included in the second group after Phar Lap, and Glare, In tho Shado, Paquito, Star God and Second Wind are in tho third group. Chido is reported to havo built up well during his holiday. He is still at F. T. Cush's stable at Randwick and it is intended to put him into work again soon, TRACK FASTER TO-DAY. CAREFUL ATTENTION GIVEN. Good work was put in by tho staff of tho Auckland Trotting Club's course at Epßom yesterday morning, a five-ton roller being liberally used on tho race-track. Tho course was considerably improved, and it should bo in muoh bettor orde> to-day than on Saturday. With a fine oloar night and every prospect of good conditions for to-day, the times are likely to bo a good deal faster than on tha opening day. CLUB AT THAMES. MR. T. W. RHODES HONOURED. [by telegraph—own correspondent.] THAMES. Saturday. At n meeting of tho Thames Trotting Club Mr. T. W. Rhodes, former M.P for Thames, was elected an honorary life member in recognition of his valuable services to tho olub Bince its inception It was stated that the club had applied for March 28, 1931, for the date of itß meeting and that the Wftikato Club had also applied for that day.
