AMATEUR ATHLETICS.

WINTER COMPETITIONS. AUCKLAND CLUB'S EVENTS. The Auckland Amateur Athletic Club continued its winter competitions at the Domain'on Saturday, when a great muster of. competitors turned out in spite of the adverse weather. The tracks were very heavy and the times were consequently slower than usual. The first heat of the 75yds. handicap was won by H. McNiel from H. Roper and A. Clark, while the second race went to L. Barker from W. Newth and R. Willey. J. Dowlo was the winner in the third hoat, with J. Turnbull and E. Wooller filling the minor places. There was a lot of bad breaking before the finalists got away to a fairly even start. At the distance H. McNiel held a slight advantage, but he could not sustain bis effort and Dowle, displaying a remarkable burst of speed, came through to win by a couple of feet from McNiel, with Clark inches away third. The one and a-half mile stooplechase was run over a well-soaked course and was a limit man's race all the way. Starting off GGs, G, Hill, who was competing in his second race, ran in fine style and catching the leaders, with only half a mile covered, ho I 'soon showed his superiority and was never headed. Savidan again ran well and opening out over tho last lap, he got up to fourth place and also gained fastest time. Following are tho results:— 75 Yards Handicap.—First heat. H. McNeil, 17yds. 1: H. A preliminary run over a three miles cross-country course at Birkenhead and Northcote was mado on Saturday afternoon by the Calliope Harriers, a new club. Eight. members .participated, and the distance was covered in 23 minutes. ' Tho youngest competitor, R. Brennan, of Northcote. a youth of 10 years, lasted the distance well and finished in good style in front of the pack.
