HOCKEY.

SECOND ROUND COMMENCED/ UNIVERSITY'S FIRST DEFEAT. BIG SCORE BY ST. LUKE'S. The second round of matches in the Auckland Hockey Association's senior competition commenced on Saturday and the results make the position more open and interesting than ever. Another eventful and spectacular game was staged between University and North Shore, the result of which was that University suffered its first defeat of the season. Wesley showed much improved form and played a draw with Somerville in a' match in which the honours were not with tho older team. St. Luke's outclassed University Whippets in their match at Walker Park and won by the biggest total recorded in any of the senior games for this season. The senior games resulted as follows: North Shore, 3; University, 2. Somerville, 0; Wesley, 0. St. Luke's, 8; University Whippets, 0. Tho following table shows the positions of tho senior teams in the championship competition;—■ Plb. Chp.

UNIVERSITY DEFEATED. As was anticipated, the match between University and North Shore was a sparkling game to watch, with the issue uncertain to the end. Play had been in progress only a few minutes when University was cornered. R. Frater took the shot from the corner hit and sent tho ball into the net. University rallied from this reverse and made things lively in the circle. Don had a shot that went past. Coming again, Seelen shot, but mishit. Don . seized the chance, however, and evened the score with a shot high into the corner. Seelen had another chance a little later, but the angle was a very difficult one and the shot went past. North Shore now took a turn at attacking, mostly by the left wing, whero Reid and Carter were. The students were cornered, but Don got possession and buatlqd through to half-way. Ellison set bis forwards going, but Parker drove back and Monteith carried on to the circle. He sent in a good shot, but Reid, who waß offside in the goal-mouth, touched it and a penalty was awarded. The nest incident was a tremendous shut by Penman, which, however, lacked direction. Reid and Carter worked through until they were in scoring position, but Brown countered cleverly and got the ball away to his forwcrds. The ball came across to Hay in a fair position, but Thornton was in time to smother his shot. University was attacking vigorously when half-time came. Tho students made the pace after changing round and North Shore escaped with Bome difficulty from a corner. . A movement started by Hoggett got right through to tho students' circle. The ball came out from Monteith to Carter, who made no mistake with a fine shot. Bestic started a rush with a pretty piece of play, but the North Shore backs saved the situation. The University forwards cam© again with spirit, and, after a couple of shots had been fended out. Hay equalised with a beautiful shot high into the net. When the University forwards moved away together Allan cleverly beat three of them and got the ball to his forwards. Crawley camo out and miesed when North Shore rushed in'in force, but Anthony's shot failed. The students' goal continued in danger for a time and Reid had a corner shot that was blocked. Hay and Seelen made a promising run, until' Frater nipped in. Play ccontinued fast and full of incident, with alternating fortunes. Seelen received an unfortunate blow from a stick and had to retire with 1 a-broken nose. When play was resumed . the North Shore forwards, ltd by Reid, charged right through, and Reid h'imself beat the goalkeeper to score a third goal. Only five minutes now remained and North Shore had no difficulty in holding its lead to the end. The final score was:—North Shore, 3; University, 2. WESLEY SECURES DRAW. " ' It was a disorganised Somervillo team and a much-improved Weßley side that tried conclusions in the first match at Remuera. C. Watts early had a shot at goal, but Donovan saved smartly. A corner followed, and from this tho Wesley forwards got away until Smith intercepted and sent them back. Roberts took the ball well down the line and Centred, but Smith cleared. C. Watts came again, leading several Somerville rushes, some of which reached the circle, but Fleet and Michel were very sound on defence. Wesley got tho advantage of a number of free hits and tho forwards engaged in bright' runs up midfield. Burton got in a hit that Wilkie was lucky to turn out and Somerville was twice cornered. Close play followed about the Wesley circle, and a shot by Watts from tho circle edge went wide. A good run by Burton and Simmondo to the circle ended in Wilkie kicking clear, and Hunter sent on to his forwards. Simmonds and Roberts took part in a pretty passing rush • and a good shot by Roberts was fortunately turned out by Gardner. , - ' . . . Wesley started the second spell aggressively and gave the Somervillo defence some anxious moments. Hard work by the Somerville forwards was often quite undone by Fleet, who was very sure in getting in bis kit. Wesley was pressing in the circle when Hunter speculated high and cleared to the line. A showy run by Roberts took him almost to the circle, but Gardner intervened and averted danger. Play swung back and forward in lively fashion, but the circle work of both sets of forwards was below standard. Seccombe and Preston took play through to Wesley's circle, but the forwards packed round and the defence held. Wesley came back and Roberts netted cloverly, c; but not before the whistle had gone for ah infringement. Wesley continued to dominate the play and Burton found the net. but he was offside. Seccombe came through the opposition and threatened trouble, but Fleet stopped him and got in his hit. Seccombe led another move that had Wesley defending and Watts twice missed with shots from corner hits. Play was in midfield when the whistle went with tho score:—Wesley, 0; Somerville, 0. A RUNAWAY VICTORY. After the first quartor of an hour or so University Whippets could do little against the concerted attaoks of St. Luke's and the score mounted steadily. Torbet and Giles led St. Luke's first attack and Graco's shot struck the side of the net. A run by Lamb and Adams brought some relief to the students and they succeeded in reaching the circle. An tpening made by Robertson led to Burnett having a shot, but Lea saved. St. Luke's first goal came from Harding's stiok and Torbet added another shortly after. The Whippets made a few spasmodic attacks before half-time. Univeisity opened the second spell with an attack which ended in a wide shot from Tasker. The St. 4 Luke's forwards carried play back, and from a struggle in front of goal Torbet scored. St. Luke's kept the upper hand and from a corner Burnett added a fourth goal. He went through again from half-way and netted. A sixth goal came when Giles got the ball, sent on by,H. Williams, and ecored. The Whippets were cornered, and, when afterwards ponned in the circle, Burnett found an opening and shot into the net. The last goal was ecorod by Grace after a smart run down the line. The final score was: St. Luke's, 8; University Whippets, 0. JUNIOR GRADE MATCHES. Second Grade.—St. Luke's, 7, Training College. 1: University Colts, 3, Wesley, 1University A. 3, Otahuhu, 3.
