At a largely-attended meeting cf maize growers in the Poverty Bay district it was decided to protest against the proposal to lift the duty cn maize. The meetin;: also recommended that a committee be set up to co-operate -with the Farmers' Union and other grain growers in New Zealand in matting representation to Parliament on the matter. The dangers of the introduction of maiie weevil were stressed by lb. W. D. Lysnar, M.P., who contended that other, industries were being protected, and maize growers were equally entitled to protection. PRODUCE IN DUNEDIN. LITTLE BUSINESS IN WHEAT. There are one or two buyers for milling wheat, but as brokers are not able to" oiler lir.es of either free or pool wheat there is little business passing. Tho majority of millers, however, have Sufficient 'wheat to carry them on, their supplies having been bought forward earlier in the season. Prices for June trre 6s 4d. f.0.h.. for Tuscan, sacks extra, and 6s fed for Hunters and velvet. These price are equivalent to 5s 9d, sacks extra, on trucks, country sidings, and 5s lid for Hunters and velvet. The fowl wheat market is firmer, but the distributing business is not so buoyant as in previous years. It is now difficult to secure fowl wheat at the price ruling, this being equivalent to 6s a bushel, sacks extra, cn truck Dunedin. The oats market is quiet Snd there is a weaker tendency throughout the South Island. A's were yesterday offering at 5s lid, f.o.h. s.L. and B's at 5s 9d. Even at these prices little interest was Leing disolaved in the market- The bulk of the oats are now in merchants' hands, there being practically no offerings from farmers. The prices named above are equivalent to 3s 2d, sacks extra, on trucks country sidings, for A's, and 3s for B's. The local potato market is slightly firmer following on the better position in Canterbury. There is still a fair quantity | held in local stores and the value j for best quality 's £5 a ton, sacks included. The shipping price from Canterbury is £4 17s 6d. to.b., s.i., which price is equivalent to £5 ex truck here. The chaff market has developed into a local one. Supplies are ccming in slowly, but thev are about equal to the demand. Best quality can be quoted at £35 10s a ton. sacks extra, ex truck Dunedin.
