IMPRISONED FOR THEFT.

TWO MEN SENTENCED. OFFENCE BY LAW CLERK. Sentence of three months' imprisonment was passed on Angus Stewart, aged 74, a farm labourer, who was charged in the Police Court on Saturday with the theft of a pair of boots valued at 18s 6d, and a lady's handbag valued at 30s. Accused pleaded not guilty to both charges. A dealer said that accused came to his shop on Friday with a pair of boots which he sold for 7s 6d. Accused said he had obtained them "at the Shore." Constable Lloyd said he saw accused in Wellesley Street on Friday, and he had the handbag in his pocket. He said he had been given the bag by a Maori woman. Accused had evidently had a few drinks. It had been found later that the purse had been stolen from a telephone box. " He has just come out of gaol after doing a month," said Senior-Sergeant Powell when Mervyn Thomas Reeves, aged 25, described as a law clerk, was charged with the theft of a book valued at Is.

The senior sergeant said that accused was seen taking the book, which was found in his possession. The book was later returned to the owner.

Accused was sentenced to seveß days' imprisonment.
