CHICAGO MURDER.

VICTIM KNEW TOO MUCH. HOBBY WHICH COST HIS LIFE. CHICAGO, Juno 12. The Police Commissioners have created six new squads of detectives, headed by men who at different times have killed from five to 11 gangsters each, for the purpose of hunting down the murderer of Arthur Lingle, the reporter who was shot dead in the street. The murder is the first notable shooting by gangsters outside their own class, and a great drive against hoodlurfas is in progress. Squads of police have combed the city, capt/uring hundreds of gangsters and racketeers, on many occasions with pistols drawn. Lawyers have flocked to the police headquarters demanding tho release of their clients, but every hoodlum has been held "incommunicado." Tho Chicago Press Club has added £2OOO to tho reward for tho capture of the killers of Lingle, who was regarded as the greatest expert on gangs and gang leaders in the city. His friends say ho knew more policemen and detectives than any city official. To-day the city is being combed as novel' before. Chicago business leaders expect that the murder will give an impetus to the movement to sweep gangs from power. Independently wealthy, Linglo had continued in his work as a reporter on tho Tribune Because ho loved to solve crime mysteries. His murder appears to have been carefully planned. At Michigan Avenue Corner, three men in a parked roadster, called to him. "Do not forget to play Doc Schneider," shouted one, referring to a horse popular with punters, for Lingle was on his way to the races. This is believed to have been the signal for tho assassin, for a passer-by noticed two strangers step behind Linglo and follow him into a traffic tunnel. A moment later one shot him and as quicklj disappeared. Tho pistol which was thrown to the ground had the maker's number filed away, while the assassin had worn a glove, sc that he would not leave fingerprints on the weapon A dozen arrests were made last night, bui little real progress was made toward the' solution of the- crime which has startled the entire cilj. The rewards offered now total £IO,OOO.
