Rear-Admiral Richard Byrd received a tumultuous welcome on his arrival at New York to-day with his companions of the Antarctic expedition. The citizens acclaimed the explorer for the third time, giving him a tremendous ovation.

The party had steamed up the harbour with an escort of 77 vessels.

Mr. Collins expressed the hope that Rear-Ad-miral Byrd will continue his explorations in the Antarctic so that ho may be welcomed to New Zealand again.

CLAIM TO LANDS.

AREA OF 125,000 MILES.

PROBABLE COAL DEPOSITS.

(Received June 20, 10.25 p.m.) NEW YORK, June 19

Rear-Admiral Byrd stated in the course of an interview that he had claimed in the name of the United States 125,000 miles of land his expedition had discovered. This land lay beyond the claims of Britain, being westward of 150 meridian.

Britain claimed lands which had not been settled, said the explorer, but he thought in regard to international law-' the Antarctic might be different in status from the rest of the world, where settler ment was required. He could not say whether the lands the United States claimed had any value, but he had every reason to believe there were enormous deposits of coal down there.
