AUSTRALIAN CRICKETERS.
MATCH WITH SURREY. GOOD LEAD ESTABLISHED. WOODFULL SCORES 141. GRIMMETT'S FINE BOWLING. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. LONDON, June 19. Tho Australian cricketers in their match against Surrey at the Oval to-day gained a substantial lead over their opponents. When stumps were drawn tho county side had been dismissed for 162 runs in their first innings and the Australians had made 332 for five wickets. In Surroy's innings Grimmett took four wickets for two runs in six overs, five of which were maidens. As tho wicket- was bad when the visitors' turn came to bat Fairfax went in with Woodfull and received the first over. Tho ball was kicking dangerously and an hour's play produced only 31 runs. Woodfull made only three in 40 minutes and Fairfax seven. After luncheon the pitch was easier and tho batsmen were more forceful. Woodfull's 50 took 110 minutes to make and the first 100 appeared on tho board five minutes later. Fender's bowling was punished. Then Fairfax tried to pull a straight ball and was out leg before. Bradman had a short stay at the wickets, being caught at square leg off Shepherd. Kippax and Woodfull then become associated. The Australian captain continued to score steadily and Kippax batted attractively. Surrey's tolal was passed with eight wickets in hand. Woodfull completed his fourth century of the tour by swinging one from Gregory to the boundary. He gave a chanceless display and scored freely after luncheon. With 200 up in oven time Kippax returned an easy catch to Peach. Woodfull and McCabe then helped themselves to runs off the tired bowlers. McCabe was bowled after playing a dashing innings for 42. Jackson started shakily. Woodfull, after batting 265 minutes and scoring 141, including 11 fours, was dismissed in attempting to hit a lofty drive. A'Beckett raced away from Jackson though ho had gone in fivye minutes later. Details of the scores are:— SURREY. —First Innings.
