GHOST SHIP SPLIT IN TWO.
MIRAGE THRILL IN MID-ATLANTIC.
A ghostly ship that seemed to change its appearanco and perform impossible antics owing to a mirago is described by an officer of the Cunard Liner Mauretania, which recently reached Southampton. Ono day out from "New York, jio says, when tho" passengers were enjoying deck games in brilliant sunshine with tho sea like glass, what appeared to bo a cargo steamer of about 8(j/0 tons with two masts and ono funnel was noticed well ahead, and travelling in the same'direction as tho Mauretania. * • . Suddenly to tho amazement of all, she appeared to turn turtle, and all that could be seen was a long, rectangular object not. unlike a naval aircraft carrier.
After a while the " ghost ship " split along .the centre, and the epill-bound passengers saw what seemed to bo two ships' hulls, one on tho surface of tho sea, and the other floating above it in mid-air. Tliis wont on for nearly an hour, when the ghost ship disappeared astern as quickly -as it had appeared. t ; .%; *.»;.
