READERS—PLEASE NOTE!, Tlioro are several special announcements to be made in connection with • Birthday Month. The first will be of particular interest to our older Members. For some time I have been wondering what special feature could be introduced in our page for the benefit of Memjbers of our Senior Circle, and have decided uporf one which x think will make strong appeal'to those. girls • and boys who are trying hard to become story-writers. * • ' ; _ I know, from personal oxperienco, the great difficulty that confronts all young writers—lack of genuine criticism and helpful advice. So witb the idea of helping our Senior Members; a special corner, " The Critic," will be introduced once a month in " Boys and Girls." / - One story, essay or poem, may bo sent in each month by Members of onr Senior Circle. The number must thus be limited so that criticism may be as full -as space will allow. If you want your work returned be sure you enclose stamped, addressed envelope. This is an unfailing rule. A prize of 'ONE HALF-GUINEA will be awarded each month fos the best story or article submitted; this will be published .in oar page. v ' ' "The Critic" is for Members of the Herald Senior Circle only. Length of stories, etc., from 600 to IGOO words. This limit must not be exceeded. - : ' ,• ' > All envelopes to be marked " Tho Critic." r : CHEERIO SCRAP-BOOKS. I was speaking to Miss Fenton, of the Children's Hospital, this week, and she was delighted to know that our boys and girls were once again going to undertake the making of Cheerio Scrap-books for the little sick children. > No doubt many of you have now completed your Birthday Month Bcrap-books, so these may now be sent to: Miss Fenton, Ward 20, General Hospital, Auckland* Four Five Shilling cash prizes for the best Scrap-books from boys and girls. Name, age, and address of sender to bo written inside cover of Scrap-book. All books to be in by June 30. CASH PRIZES FOR MERIT. As previously announced, a change will be made in allotting'the Merit List awards, now that " Boys and Girls " is starting its fourth year. Inst'oad of the award of. Mark Cards each week, four Half-crown cash prizes will be allotted each month, two for girls and two for boys. This will not necessarily stand for work published, but-for perseverance, general neatness of work and strict obedience to rules. The honour of appearing in our first list goes to those whose names are published to-day.
