APPEAL IN VERSE.
POETIC REQUEST FOR DRAINS. Although drains do not appear to be a subject to inspire one to poetry, Mr. G. 0. Campbell, schoolmaster, of Derrylin, Enniskillen, relied upon .verse in making an application for sanitary works to the Fermanagh County Council. Ho wroto: — Upon a hillside slope stands Dcrrybriclc, A school with fifty pupils. Out and in Four times a day they go. A ecbool like pin Machined new. is quickly plastered thick With mud. whate'er tho weather. lam sick Of looking at the lano in front, where, in Slimy pools, the surface waters grin And mock me openly. Nunc orat hie. If you, tho County Fathors, in kind power Would give the word to workmen within call, They could repair these drains within the hour And earn the blessing of the townland nil. Gentlemen, your purdon, this is my effort's end, I kneel within your shadow, Petitioning 1 bend. Melted by this effort, the chairman of the County Council, Sir Basil Brooke, M.P„ directed that the matter be deferred to the surveyor, adding: "He will provide a poet laureate."
